It’s suggested that 1 in 6 of us over the age of 40 will have diabetes mellitus and by 2030 its predicted that more than half a billion people will be affected!
So what can we do about this? Its more straight forward than you might think. A low GL Load diet of nutrient dense foods together with exercise and where necessary supplementation is the key to avoiding and managing the condition. A low GL diet is one where there is less of an impact on your blood sugars, therefore not spiking your insulin levels. This is because your body will need to produce less insulin to keep your blood sugar level stable, so improving your sensitivity to insulin.
What is Diabetes mellitus?
Put simply its when there is too much sugar in your blood, because a person eats too much sugar or high GL Load foods and their insulin isn’t regulated. As soon as your blood sugar goes up the pancreas releases insulin into the bloodstream so that the glucose can go into the cells to give us energy. However excess glucose is stored as fat!
If the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or the cells become resistant to it, the insulin levels become too high. This isn’t good because insulin in too large amounts can damage our arteries, brain cells, eyes and kidneys. Also insulin acts as a ‘fat fertiliser’, turning the excess sugar to fat which can contribute to cardiovascular disease. Also high levels of glucose are very inflammatory and will also feed infections.
